To Vaccinate Or Not To Vaccinate, That Is The Question!

Vaccination.

Hello and a very happy Monday to you!! I had to interrupt our series on toxin free personal care for a brief moment, because so many people have been writing asking me what my views on the flu shot and vaccinations in general are.  So please excuse the interruption, but I hope this post will help you and your family in the midst of cold & flu season!

Let me begin by saying that I had all my vaccines as a child, and certainly never thought twice about vaccines until starting the Maker’s Diet.  I still remember how much I hated getting shots!  I just wanted to preface this article with that information, so you know I have absolutely nothing against doctors or standard medical practices.  I no longer agree with the reasoning behind much of what is done “normally” these days- but I have no bone to pick.

Moving on, I am sure it will not be very hard to guess what my current stance on vaccines of ALL types is.  Take a wild guess- yep! you guessed it! I personally think there are FAR more effective ways to promote amazing health than vaccinations, (see our recent series on staying healthy during cold and flu season, for starters) and not to mention- I believe vaccinations are extremely dangerous, particularly to young, growing children.  (Although it’s my personal belief that the flu vaccine in particular is dangerous to everyone, from kids to the elderly!)

Here’s why. There’s nothing natural, or God given about vaccines. Nothing at all.  I understand the rationale behind them, I understand that they have been helpful to a point, but I also believe firmly that they are dangerous.  They are dangerous not only because of the ingredients in them (which we’ll get to) but because they are used to control people with fear.

So many people are scared to death not to get a flu shot, or to respectfully decline vaccinations at the Pediatrician’s office.  They hear the news from the media and all the hysteria about flu “epidemics” and how they might be throwing their child’s life away if they are not given the vaccine for Hepatitis B at birth.  (Which, by the way, is an STD, so don’t even get me started on that one!)

These are independent, capable people who have the capacity for strong, healthy bodies and minds to think for themselves.  So why then do we buy into the hysteria, the fear?

Personally, I believe it is very easy to control people who are afraid, and especially when you tell them that impending doom is coming if they don’t get a shot, or that there is an “epidemic” sweeping the nation.  This is purely my opinion, but it bears mentioning in this article, because vaccines are so grossly over-used these days, that we can’t touch this topic without examining the beliefs behind this issue.  It’s no longer just a medical issue- it’s become an emotional one, and I believe that many pharmaceutical companies are exploiting the emotion and hysteria that is stirred up, and the subsequent fear that is created.

The truth of the matter is that there is excessive greed and corruption in the pharmaceutical industry, and while not every doctor is a part of it, most vaccine manufacturers have a lot to answer for.

Furthermore, vaccines go hand in hand with the “medicate me and I’ll be ok” mentality that most Americans have.  I understand this, I used to be the same way. I really do, I’m not bashing anyone. You’re talking to a girl who thought that Ibuprofen and Excedrin were candy, I used to take so much of them for headaches.  I took rounds of antibiotics and medications prior to getting sick, and have no doubt that this contributed greatly to my illness.

What I feel the need to address is the mentality behind vaccines: the fear of sickness that cripples people from making the RIGHT decisions that will keep their bodies healthy year round.  People need to know that there is a better way!  This is about so much more than just the question of, “To vaccinate or not to vaccinate?” This is about being able to think for yourself, be responsible for yourself and your own health, and to steward your body in such a way that gives you incredible health for a lifetime.  THAT is what this is about.  If you decide that vaccinations fit into that, then by all means go get them.

I would just challenge you to think proactively about your own health, instead of reacting to fear, hysteria and hype and doing something without thinking.

That’s what I believe is the heart of the matter- it’s the lack of personal responsibility. It’s the “not thinking” mindset, but just doing as told, and you don’t even know why you’re doing it.  Please, do yourself the honor of thinking for yourself! Fully weigh all the possible outcomes, do the research, be an informed consumer. You owe it to yourself and your family.

So hopefully that helped somebody! 😉

Now that you’re thinking for yourself, let me just say that we have chosen not to vaccinate our kids, and we do not ever get flu shots.  We do, however, spend a large amount of time, money, and effort to invest into our family’s health by living the way that we do.  Our lifestyle is designed to optimize our immune systems year round, not just during cold & flu season!

I am against childhood vaccinations because I believe they are dangerous to rapidly growing brains and children’s neurological systems.  I believe the connection with autism is undeniable- and I think children today are heavily over-vaccinated and quite unnecessarily so.  I am also opposed to the use of aborted fetal cells which certain vaccines contain, as someone who is strongly pro-life.  And I believe the additives of mercury (or if not mercury, usually aluminum) in vaccines are extremely toxic and dangerous to anyone, particularly young children receiving them in exceptionally high doses!

I realize that every parent needs to make their own choice.  I’ve made mine and stood my ground while Pediatricians grilled me, making sure I “understood that I was attempting to make this country a modern day third world nation” by choosing not to vaccinate.  Yes, I signed the paper to opt out and didn’t think twice about the fear that Pediatrician tried to use to get me to vaccinate my first born son.

This is the same child who has not ever had to visit that same Pediatrician for any kind of childhood sickness, antibiotic, ear infection, etc… and who, along with my other two children, will likely always have an exceptionally strong, healthy body and mind for the rest of his lifetime, with the foundation that I am laying in him.

We take our flu shots every day- in the organic foods we eat, the chemicals and toxins we avoid, the high quality supplements we use day in and day out, our whole lifestyle is a flu shot year round. 🙂

Please, do your homework.  Be your own best advocate.  You can’t take for granted that a pharmaceutical company has your best interest in mind.  The potential health crises that can result from vaccinations are completely avoidable- and the choice is up to you.  You can choose amazing health!  The important thing is that you choose it. 🙂

For much more research and information on vaccines, I’d highly recommend you do further reading yourself at Dr. Mercola’s website, who has done an exceptional amount of work on this topic.  Here are a few articles to get you started!

I would also love to know how you suggest getting children (ages 7 & 4) to get on board with eating fresh organic foods. They’ve come along way! And I’m proud of their progess, but some foods they won’t eat. We also kept a box of chicken nuggets on hand to throw in the oven if they didn’t like what I cooked. I try to get them to at least taste what I’ve made and sometimes they will sometimes they won’t. I just don’t want them to be hungry or not eat enough. Help!

I left a comment earlier today but I don’t know if I hit submit! So I will post again…

My first question was do we really have a choice when it comes to vaccines? Our schools request a card of shot records just to enroll them in school. Secondly, would you consider doing a post on how you treat certain things with your kids.. like fevers? Thankfully we don’t have a lot of health issues but my older two girls suffer from allergies (we live in Alabama and it’s bad) and they take Allegra. My four year old has a very acidic stomach so she’s on prilosec but it often worries me about them being so young and taking those meds. What do you suggest? We are certainly looking for safer alternatives! Thanks for posting!

Hi Shirlee!! Yes, you absolutely have a choice! Your children belong to you, not to someone else! 🙂 My oldest is in preschool and I had to sign a card, and go through a little process to have him expempted, but it’s always possible 🙂 You have more rights than you think!
As far as treating kids illnesses- this post will help, http://theorganicmomma.com/keeping-kids-healthy-winter-3-simple-home-remedies-beat-kids-colds-flus/ and I will definitely do a post soon on allergies, thanks for the suggestion 🙂 Oh, as far as your daughter’s stomach, I’d recommend you get your whole family on the Maker’s Diet, and also get Jordan Rubin’s book, “Restoring Your Digestive Health” which will greatly help your daughter 🙂

I am a mother of two boys. My oldest is five and when it was time to get him vaccinated my husband and I decided against it. He had not major childhood illnesses, never an ear infections, a few colds here and there, but mostly in good health. When enrolling him for kindergarten this year I did have to get his vaccines in order to put him in school. The reason being when he was a baby I did get him two vaccines but that was before I was asking questions and did my homework. So because I did already give him a few the healthy department would not accept my “against my beliefs” reason. I had to get him on a very delayed schedule which he is still doing now and doing fine. I am happy to have done it this way, and my peditrician was very receptive. However with my newborn son and there being a lot of “outbreaks” of pertussis which my peditrician in formed me that he gets cases all the time. I decided to slowly vaccinate my newborn, but the two times I have done it I feel this sense of unease in my stomach that something doesn’t feel right. Anyway, that is what I did with my family.

    • 7

Thanks for sharing Alexis!! There are many “outbreaks” of a lot of things, so if you don’t want to vaccinate, don’t let that fear of them catching something scare you into it. The best defense is a good offense!! 🙂

It makes me so sad to read this because at my son’s 2 month appointment we let the pediatrician scare us into getting a couple vaccinations. I really wish I had stuck to my guns and Not let fear take over. I was planning on going to get an exemption in the near future and now I’m afraid I won’t be able to because of the one bad choice.
Since we haven’t vaccinated since then we were told not to go for wellness checks because we would expose him to illness for no reason.

      • 9

Jo, don’t let that stop you! Your son has FAR fewer vaccinations than average children today, so you just go for that exemption! All is not lost 🙂

Funny you should post this today as I was going to send you a message about vaccinations. I have been on a quest for better, natural health ever since my oldest son was diagnosed with leukemia 3 years ago. The leukemia was diagnosed with is high risk in terms of relapse because there has been a change in his DNA. He has two chromosomes that split and form a new chromosome known has the philadelphia + chromosome. Anyway, he has completed his treatment (three years of high dose chemo) as of October 2012. I am highly interested in keeping him healthy naturally so he never has to go through chemo (or worse) again. So, all that being said, I am becoming more and more convinced that the vaccinations he received as a baby had everything to do with the change in his DNA. We are on a quest for God-given natural health so that our son (and the rest of us) can live long, healthy lives.

I couldn’t agree with you more! My son will be 3 in April and has not had vaccines. Some people look at me like I have lost my mind when I mention that we don’t give him vaccines. He is very healthy. We try our best to eat clean… he takes his daily vitamins and I pray over him daily. 🙂 Love reading your post by the way! And have tried several of your recipes!

  7. 13

In with you! Me and my hubby didn’t vaccinat our nine month old twin girls! Every one always asks me why not. I just don’t like giving my children all those toxins!

  8. 14

Hey, I have just recently started eating organic, non-gmo, etc. So my body isn’t quite there yet at fighting off colds and infections. I’ve had a cough since Dec 27th and finally went to the doctor nearly a week and a half ago. He put me on antibiotics as he suspected a sinus infection. Well, this morning I take the last wretched pill. My concern is that I still have a bit of a cough, though nothing like it was. I’m supposed to follow up this week if I’m not perfect. I do NOT want more antibiotics. I’ve been dizzy and nauseated since I started on them. Any idea of a good natural antibiotic? I’ll be searching on my own too, but hoped you might have a suggestion. Thanks! Love your posts here and on Facebook. 🙂

Amen! What a breathe of fresh air it is to read your article. I love the last bit:
“We take our flu shots every day- in the organic foods we eat, the chemicals and toxins we avoid, the high quality supplements we use day in and day out, our whole lifestyle is a flu shot year round.”
Cheers to good health through nutrition!
    Thank you for this article.

Hi Catherine! I am so glad you touched on this topic. This has been the #1 thing that I have had struggles with since becoming a new mom. I questioned myself everyday on what I was going to do while pregnant and in the hospital after giving birth still struggled but fell under pressure. I said no and actually changed my mind and went ahead so scared of what would happen if I didn’t. My son just turned 1 year and has had all of his shots to date and it literally puts knots in my stomach thinking what I did to him. Each wellness visit I just felt sick. I don’t want to give him any more because that is how my heart feels I need to do. I am scared of when he has to go to school as some others have been concerned with and that I will have such a hard time. Many things keep weighing on my mind such as Did I wait too late? I pray I didn’t.

    • 19

Chris, don’t worry about school time. Just stand firm and tell them you’ll sign whatever you need to!! 🙂 And be at peace, you did the best that you could and you’re a great Mom. Just feed your son for amazing health and move forward!! You can do this!!

This was really helpful. We never had done research with our other kids and now we are working on adopting from Ethiopia. We feel unsure about what to do with bringing a child from a foreign country in our home. Should we go ahead and do vaccinations, should we hold off on our child from Ethiopia and their vaccinations? throwing this added mix into the equation causes us confusion! help!

    • 21

Hi Dawn, I think this is a slightly more tricky scenario, BUT if it were me, I’d have your new little one thoroughly checked out and tested when they arrive, and weigh the matter then. I wouldn’t automatically do vaccines for the new little one just because they’re from Ethiopia, but obviously you want to be wise and careful. I’d also plan to start her/him on the Maker’s Diet and lots of fermented foods right away! 🙂

    Hi Catherine,
I enjoy reading EVERYTHING that you post, and want to take a moment to thank you for this insight that you are sharing with others. I have been following you for a couple months on FB now, and often my thoughts are “that is exactly how I feel” when I read what you write.
This most recent information about vaccines couldn’t be more accurate. Fear based decisions do not serve us! I wish I knew then, what I know now when it comes to the health care of my family….but with that being said, I am grateful for all that I have learned regarding nutrition and health care. I currently work in a school setting, and haven’t received the flu shot in years. (After I educated myself about it and how toxic it is to the body). And, guess what…I haven’t had the flu! I eat and serve my family organic, pure foods and aside from a sniffle or sneeze (which is our body ridding itself of air pollutants or toxins), we never get sick. About 7 years ago, when we changed over to a better lifestyle, it took our bodies some time to get used to it. I learned that my entire family was “addicted” to the poisons and chemicals in foods. We went through “withdrawal” getting those things out of our systems. But, the patience was so worth it because now we enjoy our health to the fullest! Getting my two children to eat veggies has probably been the biggest challenge. I did/do this in moderation. I have learned to chop up veggies and add them to various foods that I cook. And, I LOVE trying new recipes and having them say “mom, this tastes great”! I also share with them what I put in our meals…I want my children to learn to appreciate the taste of foods as opposed to sneaking it in. I have also learned that sometimes it takes time for their taste buds to enjoy the taste of some things, so I often try the same recipe two or three times and it usually is met with a two thumbs up after a few tries. 🙂
Thank you for all that you are sharing with other families. I truly believe the more we share our insight, the more we can help each other learn how to live and enjoy a chemically free lifestyle! I look forward to reading more of your insight and sharing it with others!
    Thank you and God Bless!

Hi Rebecca!! Good for you and thank you for sharing your family’s success with eating and living this way!! It is so worth it!!

    Hello Catherine:

I just found you yesterday and then this post! God had you on my list of people to “know”! My daughter will be 3 in March and is COMPLETELY vaccine free! 🙂 I’ve fought my battles w/this and stand strong in this belief. However, even being vaccine free, she has suffered many health issues. Unfortunately, as a single mother I do my best to put the best in her body, but I will admit, she is picky and I can’t afford organic everything. I do what I can w/what I have. The recent issues are possible asthma. The dr’s just want to medicate and no one wants to find the issue at hand. I finally have an appointment w/a pulmonologist, only after my dr. refused to treat my daughter any longer. I now have a 2nd opinion w/a dr who will see her unvaccinated. Ok, so now I’m rambling…my question is: how do you recommend this life style for the “poor”? I’m doing what I can w/essential oils, but so far only have eucalyptus and peppermint. They are costly. I know that spending the money on these treatments instead of dr visits and medication will pay off, but w/the severity of her issues, I can’t just stop her appointments until I know what I am treating. The reality for me, this just goes to prove that’s it’s not only vaccines at play, but EVERYTHING in our environment that has an affect on our children’s growing bodies and immune systems. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and I look forward to seeing more from you!

    • 25

Hi Jessica!! Nice to meet you and I’m so sorry to hear about your daughter. I, too, had asthma badly while growing up, and spent many times in the hospital on a ventilator, had an inhaler, the whole bit 🙂 Anwyay, I’d highly recommend you get a copy of the Maker’s Diet, read it, and go from there 🙂 We couldn’t afford this lifestyle when we first started, but God provided for us, He really did. I’d start by reading the book and start asking God for help for your daughter! You can do this! 🙂

  14. 26

I know this is a little late in the conversation, but just to let you know that my children (14 and 16) are not vaccinated either. This might be a problem when it comes to college, but so far, the only issue I’ve had is when my pedia dropped me for it. The local hospital has a family practice, and didn’t have an issue with this, though I did get the talk all the time. I rarely made an appearance so I didn’t care. Now that MedExpress is around, I just go there if I have to. My kids do get the occasional colds and this year we all got the flu for the first time. My younger daughter was out of school for an entire week. We can make up a week of homework. We can’t make up what the vaccine would’ve, could’ve, or might’ve done internally. I am not averse to EVERYTHING. I would take antibiotics if it were absolutely necessary, or in the case of the flu this year, I did give them ibuprofen and a nasal decongestant because I think that their ability to sleep well is important to recovery. I do think scare tactics are used a lot these days. … I would like to respond to SHIRLEE about the stomach problems: My youngest has acid reflux along with seb derma/eczema. Did some research and gave up all dairy. She does still have occasional upsets, but she is much improved over what it used to be. Always look to diet first. I think you’re asking for long-term problems relying on Prilosec. Now that you’re using it, you may have a hard time getting off.

I love your article, I wish I would have been better educated before. I will be honest I feel sad, and disappointed in myself for letting my children get vaccines. My son is 2 and my other son is 5 months, am I allowed to just stop vaccinations?

    • 28

Of course you are Melissa!!! YOU are his Mom!! You can opt out of anything, just ask them what you need to sign! 😉

  16. 29

I’m so glad that you touched on the subject of vaccinations! My son is 5 and has not been vaccinated. The ideas that you touched on are all things that I agree with and read up on before he was born (thankfully). I too love Jordan Rubin’s books, especially The Maker’s Diet. I’ve battled a rare autoimmune disease for the past 10 years and have had to educate myself on a totally new lifestyle, to which I have experienced great improvement! I still would waiver on the topic of vaccinations due to the fear I would have from my son’s pediatrician for not vaccinating, or things you hear on the news. It always helps reconfirm my decision and beliefs not to vaccinate when I read articles like yours. My son too is extremely healthy. We’ve had very little need for doctor visits due to sickness. When I registered him for kindergarten (which he will start this fall) I just told them that we don’t vaccinate and we had to sign an exempt form due to religious beliefs. It was very simple and took just a minute. No further questions were asked. I was not lying either, because of the aborted fetus tissues issue in vaccines. It is because of our belief in God and following the Bible that I am against abortion. Just wanted to encourage the moms who were struggling with the whole school issue and vaccines.

  17. 31

So I am writing this in hopes of finding someone who was/is in a similar situation as myself. In grade eleven we were pressured to “figure out what is it we were going to do with the rest of our lives” as if applying to university was the be all end all for a successful life. I was freaking out and then it just hit me that I wanted to help people hence where nursing came in… growing up I never received any vaccinations (I’ve never even had an aspirin or tylenol!), my mom fed us a healthy diet and supplemented with vitamins, and we also saw (who we still see today) a man who is into natropathic wellness and uses biofeedback to do so! I have never had health issues of any sort, never been to the hospital for anything, and can’t remember the last time I got the flu, I MAYBE get a cold once a year at most. Fully understanding I could take care of my health with no use of pharmaceutical drugs and vaccinations, getting sick does not even cross my mind. UNTIL nursing school came around.. I am 22 and just finished my second year of nursing, many ask how I can be a nurse if I have such different view of health and wellness management, and I am still figuring this out. I know nursing is just the beginning and I will be going above an beyond, hopefully having an impact to teach others about this “way of living” so to speak as I truly do believe with everything I am that if done so with the right self taught knowledge and research, anyone can live this way, happily and healthily. So getting to the point.. the “vaccinations” got brought up in school, the health nurse almost doubled over when she checked my files and saw that I have never had any. Through MANY discussions, one way discussions might I add, I got the bare minimums and to this day and upset I gave in. I was thinking long term career, and the threat of being turned away from hospital clinical practice without vaccinations therefore not passing.. aka no career for me FREAKED me out. So low and behold they won. I spoke with my natropath and did the Young Living Juva Cleanse to get rid of all heavy metals, as well as many other things to make sure that as soon as the vaccinations were administered they would be “destroyed” so to speak. I know the time is going to come again when I am “due for more” and this time I am standing my ground with a loud (kind) but clear NO. Does ANYONE have any idea how to get around vaccinations and working within a health care setting? I would hate to finish nursing school, then be unable to get a job because I refuse vaccinations and have to find another career path. I do want to help people, and society IS slowly but surely welcoming the integration of more “spiritual, nutritional, well rounded care” but not nearly fast enough. Anything at all.. I cannot thank you enough for your responses.

Hi Christine! My answer to you comes not in the form of health advice, but a book my husband has recently read which I think will help you greatly! It is called “Crucial Conversations” by authors Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillan, & Al Switzler and it teaches you how to navigate even the most delicate, difficult conversations and issues while still showing respect to others, yet maintaining your ground. You don’t need to give in to fear, these people do not control your life or your career, that is in God’s hands 🙂 This book will help you a lot, I really think it will! It’s on Amazon or at any bookstore like Barnes & Noble 🙂 My husband has told me there are many examples of nurses standing up to doctors in the book, very respectfully, so that made me think of it for you too when I read what you said 🙂 I hope this helps you!! http://www.amazon.com/dp/0071771328/ref=as_li_ss_til?tag=httpwwwtheorg-20&camp=0&creative=0&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=0071771328&adid=06DYXSH58WRA77CCJWQD

    Hi,
My question is how do you handle the doctor visits? Do your children go to a pediatrician? Do you take them for their well visit checks still? Pediatrician’s seem to be very pushy when it comes to vaccinating. It seems like it would just be easier not to go to the well visit checks than to have to listen to the pressure they try to put on you to vaccinate. But, then you hear about how they are calling CPS on parents that aren’t taking their children to well visit checks and vaccinating. I am just curious how others handle this.

    • 34

Hi Carla! At doctor’s visits I just explain calmly that we won’t be vaccinating. If they push for a reason, I give them a few and tell them I’m ready to sign anything they need. I think they can tell pretty quickly that I’m not going to budge. Just stand your ground. They’re YOUR child!

  19. 35

    Hi Catherine!

My child is 9 months old and i really wish i would of read your blog sooner about vaccinations! I have always been weary about them but reading your blog and websites you added just make it more clear to me that i made a mistake on getting my child vaccinated. Do you think that its too late now to stop the vaccinations? The next set would be at his 12 month visit, i feel like i already put so much in his body that it would help now to stop 🙁 . It makes me so mad!!

    • 36

Hi Lia! Don’t beat yourself up, you can’t hold yourself accountable for that which you did not know 🙂 There’s a lot of scare tactics out there too about vaccinations just how I mentioned in the article. And any less will ALWAYS help!!

  20. 37

Reading your article makes me soooo HAPPY!!!! It is so hard being a non-vaxx parent these, constantly getting criticized by other parents and doctors. I have 2 boys, the first received his first few doses until he had a horrible reaction and then I completely stopped, my second son hasn’t had a single shot since day one and has never been healthier or happier. We also believe that you are what you eat and too many people don’t take care of themselves and load their bodies with GMO’s, hormones, and other processed foods just loaded with preservatives and other nasty ingredients. We grow as much of our own veggies as possible and everything else is completely organic and free-range. I hope that one day parents will wake up and realize that it’s all about the money in the pharmaceutical industry, they are only out to keep you sick, so they can keep making money.
