Chocolate for stress relief

Ok- so, I have some news for you. My sister in law is in town, and she made me something that my healthy self is just simply geeking out over: ADAPTOGENIC ORGANIC HOT CHOCOLATE.
Ok….so what are adaptogens? Let’s just say that the translation is this- they make you feel better. happier. calmer. more sane. lower blood pressure. less screaming at kids, pulling hair out, tears- you know 🙂
The scientific definition of adaptogens is that they help your body cope with stress with less of a withdrawal on your system.
But back to the chocolate part. So, my sister in law lives in San Francisco and is surrounded with all things health minded and I love hearing new ideas whenever she comes into town.
The first day she was here she begins telling me about how she has been making the aforementioned adaptogenic hot chocolate. All she does is use organic raw cocoa powder, organic cocoa powder, and a little bit of sweetener like organic coconut sugar or organic evaporated cane juice. (You could even use honey)
Then, the magic of the adaptogens. She buys adaptogenic herb powders like: organic reishi (which is a mushroom) and organic ashwagandha (there are about 16 total adaptogenic herbs that have been scientifically proven to lower cortisol levels and help your body resist the negative elements of stress and those are two of them)
and then she mixes only about 1/8 teaspoon of the herbs into her hot chocolate. You could even do this with tea!
Let’s just say…I’ve been making her make me stress reducing hot chocolate every night 🙂
Here’s the recipe in case you want to make some!
Stress Relieving Hot Chocolate
8 oz organic raw milk
1-2 tbsp organic cocoa powder (depending on personal preference)
1-2 tbsp organic coconut sugar, organic Rapadura, or organic raw honey to taste
1/8-1/4 teaspoon organic adaptogenic herbs such as organic reishi mushroom powder, or organic rhodiola rosea powder
In a VitaMix or blender, combine all ingredients and mix gently. Heat in a small pan on your stove and enjoy! (Or, make your favorite cup of tea and add in some of the herbs)
I’m still scouting out great sources of the adaptogenic herb powders. I’ll let you know once I know more 🙂
Oh….and my sister in law says that in San Francisco, there are several companies nearby her that sell organic chocolate bars with these herbs already mixed in, so I promise I will tell you where you can get adaptogenic organic chocolate BARS once I find out!
For your health!
