Personal Care Without Chemicals: Review of Beyond Organic Shampoo

Beyond Organic Shampoo

Hello there and happy Monday! Did you have a nice weekend? I finally got my Christmas decorations down and we took the tree out. 🙁 I think it’s always nostalgic to put away the Christmas decor away, and I can’t believe Christmas went by so fast!
Anyway, we’ve officially wrapped up our series on staying healthy during cold & flu season, and the different foods to focus on to keep your family healthy when it seems like everyone around you is falling like flies from the flu.

And by the way, please, please don’t fall prey to the mass hysteria about epidemic flu outbreaks and how desperately you and your family are in need of a flu vaccine.  There is so much hype out there, and while it may certainly be true that many people are sick, it’s equally true that people who are living offensively and taking care of their health, and know how to treat cold & flu symptoms naturally have NOTHING to fear! 🙂

You don’t need a flu vaccine, and in fact they’re quite dangerous in my opinion and I prefer following the Maker’s Diet, taking great probiotics, using amazing essential oils, making fermented foods, lots of homemade chicken stock, etc, to getting a toxic needle in my arm any day! 😉

And that has nothing to do with our blog post for today!! Lol!! ANYway, just read up on how to stay healthy, (in case you missed our series) and today we are going to move on to a series about some of my favorite organic, truly toxin free personal care products.  Many of you have been asking which personal care products and makeup I use and recommend, so we’ll spend a week or two looking at some!

Toxins and chemicals in personal care products are so pervasive, and so dangerous, but very few people are truly aware of the danger they pose.  Public awareness is rising, but I’d say the vast majority of people are still using mainstream deodorants, shampoos, shaving creams, hair products, etc, and not thinking twice about it.

I first switched ALL of our personal care products right after starting the Maker’s Diet over 7 yrs ago. I’ll never forget the first day I found out what a paraben was and how these toxic preservatives were linked to breast cancer, and other illnesses.  I ran to my cupboard and was shocked to see them in nearly every hair care product and makeup item that I owned!! I couldn’t stand it. I threw them away immediately and took a trip to Whole Foods!

Once at Whole Foods, however, I learned quickly that just because a product claims to be natural or organic, or just because it’s being sold in a health food store did not mean it was truly toxin free.  This is a crying shame, but it’s the way it is, and it’s why we consumers need to be truly educated about which ingredients are good, and which are not.

As I did with all of our food products, I began researching like a maniac about the main brands of personal care products that I found.  I was disillusioned by many, impressed by a few- and then came the real test, seeing if they actually worked.  There’s a lot of trial and error involved in trying new products.

One of my first trials was with Aubrey Organics, who makes a great line of toxin free skin care and hair care products.  I quickly found out though, that their usage of coconut oil (which is obviously a great ingredient!) didn’t work well for my hair at all, which tends to get oily quickly. My hair was greasy almost immediately after shampooing- not the look I was going for.

I could not find any other brand as pure as Aubrey’s. I also tried using my favorite body wash soap, Miracle Soap, as well as Dr. Bronner’s lavender and tea tree oil castile soap, but both products dried out my hair immensely, although to their credit they did make it very clean! 🙂

I have long hair, and I particularly dislike when products make my ends look brittle and dry.  I prefer my hair to be soft to the touch and shiny.  (By the way, taking cod liver oil is excellent for giving you shiny hair!)

Anyway, so I’ve actually been on a hunt for quite some time for a shampoo that I could feel truly ok with using as far as purity was concerned, but also that worked extremely effectively.  Before I started the Maker’s Diet I used to love Biolage and any shampoo that smelled amazing and gave great results. I gave up my Biolage right away, but I did still miss it. 🙂

That is, until last week when I got my hands on the new Beyond Organic shampoo & conditioner and tried it for the first time!!

I admit it- I was skeptical and had no idea what to expect. I mean, I figured it would work fine, but I was worried about greasy or oily hair again.

OMG is all I have to say, O.M.G, I have never felt so pampered or relaxed using a shampoo, or had it work SO amazingly well!  First off, it smells like the most wonderful field of organic oranges.  Then, you are supposed to let it sit on your hair for several minutes to let it work on your scalp. (Hello, spa treatment much?!) and it actually feels amazing!! It feels…rejuvenating.  You can really tell it’s working, treating your scalp, moisturizing and cleaning at the same time.  And the smell the whole time is just so lovely!!

Then you rinse it out, and you know how great it feels when your hair is soft right away?? I love that feeling. By then I was already sold. I have never felt relaxed washing my hair, for crying out loud, that I was in love with the shampoo just because I felt so taken care of! Lol!

I used the conditioner too, which smelled equally amazing. After drying my hair, I couldn’t believe how soft it was.  And it had great volume, too- it just felt really healthy.  The first day I wore my hair down after washing it, my kids kept touching it all day, lol! I have to admit I did too! I couldn’t believe how soft my hair was, how shiny, and how much I couldn’t wait to use the shampoo again!

Another bonus I noticed is that during winter time only, (I’m a CA girl, what can I say? I guess my head is still not used to snow and true cold!) my scalp tends to be very flaky and dry.  This shampoo & conditioner was so moisturizing and I noticed an immediate difference in how moisturized my scalp was. I am hoping this gets even better the more I use it!

So, I guess you can tell I loved it 😉 And to just wrap it all up with a beautiful bow is the incredible, wildcrafted and organic ingredients.  After reading the ingredients I saw why it worked so well!! Organic frankincense, myrrh, jasmine, green tea leaf extract, rose, among others are some incredible beauty care ingredients! And, they’re completely natural and chemical free. No wonder it smelled so amazing but still worked so well!

Here’s a full list of the ingredients in the shampoo:

Ingredients: Organic, Wildcrafted Botanical Infusion [Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract*(and) Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Flower Extract* (and) Reign Supreme(and) Wildcrafted Carya Ovata (Hickory) Bark Extract**(1) (and) Rosa Damascena (Bulgarian Rose) Extract* (and) Boswellia Carterii (Frankincense) Bark Extract* (and) Commiphora Myrrha (Myrrh) Resin Extract*], Decyl Glucoside (Coconut Derived) (1), Coco-Glucoside (Coconut Derived) (1), Vegetable Glycerin**, *Organic **Eco-Cert (1)Organic Compliant / Eco-Cert Compliant

You could practically eat this stuff it’s so pure! I mean, don’t eat it, really, but seriously, this is truly toxin free shampoo that WORKS!

    Hi Catherine,
Have you tested or looked at ingredients in WEN haircare. I use that and have for a while. I know it has some natural ingredients but I haven’t looked at them all. I know that I love it though. Maybe I’ll research that today. My hair and scalp are finicky too, one oily and the other dry. It’s hard to find something that works. Thanks for all the info you give us!!

Sounds really good, but I’m a bit skeptical if you are financially benefiting from the sale of the products, sorry 🙁

Hi Kim!! Yes the shampoo is really good!! What you really want to look for is if the quality matches how good I am saying it is- not if I am benefiting from the sale of any product. 🙂 I wouldn’t recommend anything I don’t use and love myself!

I’ve been doing a lot of research on this very subject. Right now I’m trying out Giovanni, Alba, and Avalon. For make up and face moisturizer I’m trying Everyday Minerals and Real Purity. I’ve also tried Arbonne and Lia Sophia. For toothpaste and mouthwash I use Desert Essence. For deodorant I use Real Purity. Have you looked at any of these? And do you know if Beyond Organics test on animals.

Hi Lorrie!! Yes, I have tried many of those brands 🙁 Giovanni, Alba, Avalon, & Desert Essence- all are good “natural” products but none are 100% pure of toxic ingredients. It’s a shame because you’d think that walking into a health food store everything would be ok, but it’s not the case. And I believe Beyond Organic does not test on animals, I’m pretty certain, but let me check for sure 🙂

    Hi Organic Momma!
I was wondering if you had ever seen Costco’s Kirkland brand of Shampoo and Conditioner simply called “Moisture Shampoo” and “Moisture Conditioner.”
    Sulfate Free
    100% Vegan
    Paraben Free
    Gluten Free
What do you think of it and/or have you ever ran past it in Costco before?

    • 15

Hi Charity!! I don’t have a Costco membership and have never seen this one 🙂 While it’s great it is without those ingredients, it’s unlikely that it’s 100% pure. Another thing I’d be looking for are phthalates, which are synthetic fragrances and highly toxic. And companies aren’t required to list them on the ingredients!

Thanks for the review! I’ve been wondering about shampoos for a long time and, like you, have a hard time finding ones that don’t dry my hair out. My question is, if they do not have to list ingredients like phthalates, how do we know if the shampoo contains any? Also, have you tried the brands Adama or Yerba? I’m wondering if those 2 were ever part of your research and if they are truly toxin free. Thanks!

    • 17

Hi Annelise!! The only way to find out is to contact the company directly! It’s a shame companies aren’t required to list phthalates! Beyond Organic does not use them and states this clearly on their website 🙂 And no, I haven’t ever tried Adama or Yerba! 🙂

    Hi Catherine,

I am wanting to switch to a natural shampoo and conditioner, but I have one MAJOR barrier- PRICE….

I have VERY long, thick, but generally easy hair. I used Treseme forever and could run the brush from scalo to ends immediately after getting out of the shower. So if something does not work at detangling and moisturizing my hair similarly, I am very disappointed.

Also, I HAVE to wash my hair almost daily because I work out daily and boy howdy, when I work out I SWEAT.

So how long do you think that a bottle of shampoo and conditioner would last? I go through conditioner almost twice as fast as shampoo 🙁

    • 19

Hi Faith!! Goodness, I wish I could give you an approximate time frame, but this will depend so much on how much product you use when you wash your hair, how long your hair is, etc… It IS extremely moisturizing and makes your hair soooo soft! All I know are my own results: I wash my hair 1-2 x per week (not very much I know!) and one bottle lasted me about a month- the conditioner I still have- I think it will last be about 2 months. It might be something you have to try out and see for a month or so! 🙂

Just found your site and am very happy. My daughter is using the Feingold Diet for my grandson with amazing results – he cannot have anything that is not 100% natural, so this particular article is pertinent.
Question though – is this shampoo safe for color-treated hair? W/out chemicals, it won’t strip the hair at all will it? Thanks

    • 21

Hi Carol!! Nice to meet you!! So glad to hear about your grandson. Yes, this shampoo is definitely safe for color treated hair, it’s very gentle 🙂

Hi! I was trying to order the shampoo and the conditioner but I can only find the conditioner on the website. I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong or that they don’t sell the shampoo anymore. I need some help 🙂

  12. 25

I was wondering how to purchase this shampoo ….. The website only showed the conditioner. Thank you for your time.

I was told when I called (longevity-the new marketing/distribution co. They use) that it is out of stock and should be in by the end of the month.

Hi Catherine – I was using this shampoo and conditioner and loving it, but now they don’t make it anymore. A replacement I was told was Miessence. I tried that and don’t love it. I see that they still make the Beyond Organic conditioner and I have stocked up. What do you use now instead of this shampoo? Thanks!

    • 30

Hi Katrina!! Where did you find the conditioner? I sure miss it! Best shampoo & conditioner I’ve ever used! I am using Andalou Naturals shampoo and conditioner. I like it a lot but it’s not the same as the Beyond Organic line 🙂
